Biography

Dr. Elizabeth Dawes, full professor of French Studies, is currently serving in the role of Special Advisor to the Registrar, responsible for reinstating the University Calendar. She held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts (the former Faculties of Social Sciences and Humanities) at Laurentian University from August 1, 2010 to July 31, 2018. She previously served as Associate Dean of Arts (2008-10) at the University of Winnipeg where she taught French Studies in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (1992-2008). She holds a B.A. (spéc.) from the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Université de Montréal. She is a specialist in medieval Romance phraseology and has published diachronic and comparative studies of idioms (e.g. “Être dans le même bateau en italien, anglais, français et allemand: étude contrastive d’une locution polysémique”, Proverbium. 24 (2007): 51-108). She has also published on the formal and semantic differences between idioms in Quebec and France.

Research

Dr. Elizabeth Dawes is a specialist in medieval Romance phraseology and has published diachronic and comparative studies of idioms (e.g. to break the ice) in journals such as Neophilologus, Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie, Florilegium, Proverbium: Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship, Romance Languages Annual and Ethnologies: Language and Culture/Langue et culture.
